Choosing a planetary mixer for a café: 5 checks before you buy

Buying guide

10-litre planetary food mixer with its bowl and guard
The 10L planetary mixer discussed in this guide.

A planetary mixer can be useful when a café prepares its own batters, icing, whipped mixtures or suitable dough recipes. The right choice starts with what you make and the size of each batch, rather than the largest bowl you can fit on a counter.

1. Start with the recipe

List the mixtures you need to prepare and check the manufacturer’s instructions for each. A machine’s suitability for one mixture does not establish its permitted load or running time for another.

2. Separate bowl volume from batch weight

A 10-litre bowl does not mean a 10kg ingredient allowance. Check the model’s mixture limits and any recipe-specific restrictions rather than converting litres into kilograms.

Our 10L planetary mixer and 15L planetary mixer offer different bowl volumes. Compare their current specifications and operating instructions against your normal recipe before deciding whether the larger model gives you a useful benefit.

These figures are from the current KitchenLynx product specifications. Always check the manufacturer’s operating limits for the exact mixture you plan to prepare.

3. Check the included attachments

Both of these models list a dough hook, beater and wire whisk. Check which attachment the instructions require for your mixture and how it should be fitted and used.

Do not assume an attachment for another mixer will fit because the bowl size or appearance is similar. Confirm the exact model when sourcing replacements.

4. Check space and practical access

Measure the intended position and the route into the kitchen. Include room to lift the guard, remove the bowl and carry out cleaning, rather than checking the machine’s footprint alone.

Also check the supporting surface and the electrical requirements of the exact machine. Ask about any unclear specification before committing to a position or installation.

5. Include cleaning and support in the decision

Check how the bowl and attachments are removed and cleaned, what maintenance the manual requires and whether replacement parts can be identified for that model. Follow operating and guard instructions; do not infer continuous-duty capability from the word “commercial”.
